LATJNOHING OP THE TAIKOA. Sir W. G. Armstrong, WhiUorth and Co., Ltd., recently launched from their Armstrong shipyard the twin-screw cargo steamer Tairoa, which was built to tne order of the Shaw, Suvill and Albion Co., Ltd. 'I'hiß vessel ie of the two-deck and shelter-deck type, and haß been built to the requirement of Lloyd's Registry. She is insulated throughout for the carriage of frozen and chilled meat. Special attention has been paid in the design to the Tapid. and . economical ■ handling of cargo, each-hold being. provided with numerous derricks and winches for this, purpose, there boiog 18 winches in all. 1 The principal,dimensions of the vessel are: —Longth, between perpendiculars, 477 ft.; breadth, moulded, 62ft. 9in.; depth, moulded to upper deck, 34ft. 4in.; depth, moulded to shelter dock, 42ft. 4in.; dead-weight on loaded draught of 28ft. 9in.; tons, 11,000.
The hull is divided into nine watertight compartments, by means of eight transverse watertight bulkheads. Water ballast is carricd in the afterpeak, :ind the doublo bottom oxlende the full length ,of the vessel between this tank and the forepeak bulkhead.
The ' propelling machinery consists of two sets of quadruple expansion engineß, having cylinders 23in. x 32in. i 45in. x 65in„ with a Btroke of 48in. Kteam at tßOlb. pressuro is supplied from five boilers, 15ft, 4Jin. diameter, and 12ft. 4in. long. These boilers are fitted with Jlowdcn'B forced-draught system. The propc> lers are four-bladotl, and manufactured of bronze. Tho designed horsc-powor for the machinery is 5000, which gives a speed of about 13 knots.
The Bteering gear is of the Wilson Pirio type, housed in the shelter deck aft, and is controlled by telemotor from the navigating bridge. , The vessel is fitted with a, Marconi wireless installation.
This launch marks an epoch in the history of the Armstrong Naval Yard a_B under the great commercial reconstruction policy laid down by Armstrong's. Bhe is the first mercantile vessel to bo launched from this yard, which was originally designed and laid out entirely for warship building. In addition to Ihc •Talroa, the naval yard Is at the present time fully occupied in the construction of many, other types and sizes of mercantile vessels.
