KHANDALLAH BUSH
—- -» -— PRESERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT SIR DAVID HUTCHEN'S PLEA
A largo deputation of Khandallah residents was introduced to tho Reserves Oommittee of tho City Council, yesterday afternoon by Councillor J. It. Dale, ill connection with matters concerning tho preservation and improvement of the Khan-' dallah bush reserve and domain. Brigadier-General G. S. Klchardson said that the Khandallah bush was ono of Iho beauty spots of .Wellington and it was desired ,oy tho residents that it should be preserved as such, He stressed tho danger of its extinction from fire. Ee was not an oxport, but ho understood that il paths wero cut through the bush somo preventive measures could bo taken to aubduo outbreaks of lire. If it were desired to preserve tho bush it was surely worth taking such measures, and he hoped the council would take action in that direction beforo next 6ummcr. Sir David Hutchens said that the question of tho danger to tho bush by tho construction of internal fire lines was too technical to go into there, but ho had prepared a, memorandum on tho subject, which ho would leave with the coinmitlco'i ,? 8 *<> tllo protection of the bush, probably they would all agree that was necessary. The Khandallah - bush was . mora valuable to Wellington than the Day s Bay bush, as it was nearer tho city, and Its growth was of a more miscellaneous character, as it was founded on particularly good soil, and .having gone through the bush .ono emerged upon a rPr°L wll ' c ' l S a7 ° a viow unsurpassed in Wellington. One point lie would suggest was that as the. eoun'cil bad snent something like £21,001) on Day's Bay, they might tako into consideration tho acouislHi? & I '? w ' pri , c^, lan ? near , the KhaudalJ i D ?£ a k'/.
