SEAMEN'S UNION

A STOP-WORK MEETING. A stop-work meeting, of the Wellington Seamen's Union was held yesterday morning. A report supplied by the union states that the meeting authorised legal proceedings against the Blackball Coal Company to recovor compensation on behalf of a member who lost the sight of an eye while employed in tho stokehold of a collier in January. A letter was received from the U.S.b. Company asking that arrangements sbonld be made for some firemen to remain aboard steamers while slop-work meetings were being Held, in order to maintain steam for lights and sanitary purposes. 'The meeting■ decided that it would not nceede to the request. The meeting considered the ease of a member of the stokehold crew of tho ferry steamer Walvine, who wa* charged with having committed n breach of the agreement bv working from 8 a.m. to i p.m. on Mnv 24 without an interval for dinner. The man in question was heard in explanation,- and was then fined

The following motion was carried:— "That whereas conscientious objectors and other military offenders have been released 'from the prisons of the United Kingdom and other -.countries, this stopwork meeting of seamen requests tho New Zealand Government to raiso its policy of vindictiveness by immediately releasing all similar offenders, and that tho military defaulters' list and tho law under which it was made, including the War Regulations, be at once repealed.

A most interesting evening has been arranged by the Early 'Settlers' Association to take tho form of a social evening and dance. A pageant dance has boon arranged, and those who took part in the historical' Pageant have been,invited to be present, dressed as they were for tho part they took: on'that occasion.. ...A unique-, opportunity will bo given to, compare the encient. and modern styles of dress and dancing. Tho gathering is to tako placo on Thursday at 8 p.m. Tickets can be obtained from members o! tho commttteo or oithor of tho eecretariej, P.O. Box 877.
