Egypt), writing in the "Standard" regarding tho Gallipoli campaign, says: "Lord kitchener ordered mo to give Sir lan Hamilton all he asked for. I did so, time and again, and sent the best troops. I denuded Egypt to cope with his demands, and by so doing I took great risks, knowing the danger of an attack on tho Suez Canal, which finally was left with one complete formation of Yeomanry. Sir lan Hamilton got tho pick of the Australians. When he states that I refused him a brigade of Gurkhas, I merely reply that there was no such brigade." Sir John Maxwell regards Sir lan Hamilton's statement that the administrative staff had not reached Mudros at (ilio time tho landing was planned, as mi amazing admission. The work of dealing with the sick and wounded, water supplies, and ammunition., was tho concern of the administrative staff; the general staff was concerned only with fighters. ■ He adds: "The Gallipoli campaign failed in great part owing to the impasse over the sick and wounded, and the lack of water!—Aus.-N.Z.
