OVERLAPPING EFFORT
TECHNICAL COLLEGE AND W.E.A At (he monthly meeting of tho Technical College Board last night tho director (Mr. J. H. Howell) rend a letter from Mr. Hall, who wished to be relieved of his duties as electrical instructor on Eridny evenings, owing to his having been appointed instructor to the Workers' Educational Association at a salary of Jc'i per annum. Tho'director pointed out that the sum mentioned was, four times that paid at the Technical College. The sum was far greater than they were in a position to Pa.v, yet the work proposed to be done by the Workers' Educational Association could verv well be dona at the college. In fact, they gave a very good electrical training at the college, both theoretical and practical. In the course of desultory discussion it was asked where the funds enme from for the Workers' Educational Association, and the answer was that they enme from the Government, local bodies, etc., much the same sources as those that the college derived its income from.
The chairman said that there appeared to bo some overlapping. The City Council gave ,£3OO a year to the college and iCIOO a year to the Workers' Educacational Association. ■
The director said that he had understood that the work of the W.E.A. consisted of giving; lectures on economics, English, etc., to working men, but now it seemed as if the association was giving tuition. If instructors were to be given such remuneration by the W.E.A., it might prove difficult to retain the college staff at the present rates: of pay. A suggestion was mado that the duplication of effort might be brought under the notice of the Government.
The chairman ruled that giving publicity to the situation might be sufficient for tho present. ,
