Mr. Thomas Forsyth (chairman of the Wellington Education Board) left for Dunedin last evening on private business.
Mr. N. Galbniith, manager of the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Shipping Company, has resigned. Ho will be succeeded by Mr. R. Cameron, of the Tokomaru Bay office. The lntter's position will be filled by Mr. P. E. Fordham. Mr. Galbraith has accepted a position with Messrs. John Mill and Co.—Press Assn.
The Chief Telegraph Engineer of the Dominion (Mr.. E. A, Shrimpton) will leave on a business trip to England on June 17, connecting with the Indarra at Sydney. During his absence the duties of chief engineer will devolve on Mr. A. Gibbes, Assistant-Chief Telegraph Engineer.
Mr. R. G. Thomson, of Hansard staff.' died at Dannevirko on Sunday night. Mr. Thomson contracted tuberculosis some few years ago, and since then his health failed rapidly. He was for many years on the reporting staff of tho "Otago Daily Times," and ho had been on Hansard 6taff for nearly 20 years. He leaves a widow and • one son. , '
Mr. J. W. Butler, who was for some time attendance officer to the Wellington Education Board, has been appointed director of the Wellington Boys' Institute, and was welcomed at a .social held on Friday evening.
'Members of the harbourmaster's staff yesterday afternoon presented Mr. Edward Quinlan, .chief signalman at the Qi cell's Wharf tower, who retired from the Harbour Board staff yesterday, with a rug and travelling-case. Eulogistic references to the work of Mr. Quinlan were mnde by various speakers.
The death occurred suddenly at I'etone at about 9 o'clock yesterday morning of Mr. J, P. Gilmour, a very, old resident of the district. It appears that after having his breakfast Mr. Gilmour complained of the cold and went to bed, where he expired shortly afterwards. The late Mr. Gilmour was of Scotch descent and was born in Boston, U.S.A., , C 5 years ago. At tho age of 20 he left America and came to New Zealand, living for twelve years' in Canterbury, and then settling in Petone, where ho had resided for 33 years. ' For 20 years Mr. Gilmour was employed in the pelt plastering department, of the Gear Company, hiivinjr retired ten 1 years ago. He was a senior trustee in the local Druids' Lodge, and had been a Past District President of the Poneko Lodge and a member of the Manchester Unit)' of Oddfellows, Canterbury. He was also a prominent bowler. He is survived ' bv a widow and an adopted daughter. In tiie afternoon' Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M., held an inquest, at which Dr. Duggle attended and gave evidence. A verdict of death from heart failure was returned.
