■ ABANDONMENT ANNOUNCED. London, May 28. It is understood that Dr. Cope's proposed expedition to the Antarctic has been definitely abandoned.—Aus.-N.zi. Cable Assn. [Dr. Cope has been energetically organising an ambitious plan for an expedition to the Antarctic. The main objects woro to ascertain the position and extent of the mineral and other deposits of economic value known to exist in Antarctica, to obtain further evidence of tho localities and migrations of whale.s of economic value, investigate the meteorological and magnetic conditions m the Ross Sea area and at Cape Ann (Jinderby Land), circumnavigate tho Antarctic continent, and generally to extend knowledge of Antarctica, with a view to obtaining further scientific data of economic importance. Special interest has attached to the proposal of Dr. tope to attempt a flight by aevoplano to the Pole, and a vigorous confrbversy lias been carried on regarding the possibility of this venture. Tho scheme of the expedition was recently considered by the Royal Geographical Society, and a sensation was caused when it was learned that this important organisation had disapproved of the expedition—a decision which must have shaken severely tho public confidence, upon which tho venture greatly depended.]
