ROSENEATH'S NEEDS
DEPUTATION TO OUTLYING DISTRICTS' COMMITTEE. A deputation representing the Eosoneuth and Oriental Bay MunWpal Electors' Association waited on the Outlying Districts Committee of the City Council. Mr. It. W. Burbidgo reminded tho committee that in 1914, before war broke out, the Mayor put forward a loan schedule, which provided for a better road access to upper Roseneath by way of Hawker Street, across the Belt, to Grafton Eoad, and so on to Hataltai. That routo was decided upon after exhaustive surveys, and it came before tho council, and was approved. The council thou considered that better communication by road was ro quired-that need still applied. They realised that the council could not do anything during tho war, but now that was happily onded they wished to bring before the oouncil that and other urgent needs of the district. There were largo areas of building' land about Shannon Street, round Mount Victoria, in Upper Boßeneath and Hataltai, and he was quite sura that owing to Its proximity to tho city that land would bo built on if better communication by a well-graded road wore provided. It was pitiful to see a woman pushing a pram Up to Eoseneath at present with on* <-.Mld in the pram and another toddler hanging on to her skirts. Tiwa was u. Prevention ot Cruelty to Animals Society, but-well, he thought such women wero heroines. A'motor bus service by the routo suggested—Majorlbanks Street, Hawker Street, Town Belt, Grafton Koad-to Boyd's Btoro at Hataital, would, he though, tre-a payable-pro-position, as it would get a lot of patronage from people living in Hawker. Shannon, and Maclean Stroets, and also from the residents of upper Eoseneath and northern Hataitai. They could not expect to get tho tram as things wero at present, but given the road be given a Sub until tho trams canio along. Tho speaker ulbo referred to a petition about the proposed new road, which had been handed in to the Town Clerk Bomo three months'ago. Tho only refusals to sign ho had met wero from people In Hawker Street, who frankly admitted that their properties wero encroaching on tho road, and they did not wish tho existing conditions disturbed. Mr. Thomas Ward spoke of the difficulty of tho road probloniß within the district. Eoßeneath was one of the older suburbj, and it bad not been well laid out, There were three roads traversing the district, north and south-Pallißer Eoad, Grafton Eoad, and Maida Valo Boad, but thero wero hardly auy croso roads to connect them. One could walk for half a mile without being able to cross from one road to tho other, which was very inconveni< cnt. Ho hoped that such roads would bo provided-thero were drainage areas hero and there whioh might bo widened out. The council might' look fnto tho matter and sco if such conditions could not be altered. The sum of £500 had beon voted by the oounoll for the widening of Grafton Eoad, but it had nover been spent. Thero had boon a slip, too, on tho road. That work, too, had been ordered to be done, but beyond putting up Borne wires ho could not sec that anything had been done, Thoro wero dangerous points on the roads—one very dangeroUs ono close to tho Fire Brigado Station. Then again tho Firo Brigade Station—that rotten old structirc—had been foisted on to Eoseneath when cast off by another district. They had a very enthusiastic Tolunteer Piro Brigado, whioh deserved something better. Mr. Ward also urged tho completion of the Oriental Bay Parade, and tho erection of suitablo conveniences at the tram terminus for both sexes, In reply, Councillor L. M'Kenzie iald tho committee had boon, quite ..alive to tho needs of Eoseneath, arid ha quoted■ frelti' tho minutes in proof thereof! "hut' difficulties had been encountered which they could hot surmount (particulars of which aro fully reported elsewhere). As soon as the6o -were removed Boaenoath, would be considered in tho ranks tobo undertaken.
