Mr. Morton said that after considering tho various points, he was of opinion that the Evans Bay aito was tho most suitable. It could be obtained at once. In fact, the first right of refusal of tho purchase of tho land had been granted to the department by the owners of the property. The existing plant in Harris Street was totally inadequate for the purposes for which it was at present requirod, and, in addition, it was advisablo to be in a position to chnngo over a 8 much as possible of tho present system before the supply from Mangahao was available. Mr. Morton submitted a statement showing tho estimated cost of installing additional plant at Harris Street and at 'Evans Bay. This showed that tho estimated cost, of installing extra plant and carrying out improvements at tho present site in Harris Street would be in tho vicinitv of .£300,000, and thus the total expenditure on plant and buildings at Evans Bay would lie .£388,000. The ultimate amount of capital expenditure required for a now power station at Evuns Bay, he said, was comparatively slight, when compared witfr the cout ot similarly equipping the Harris Street station. The council decided to adopt Mr. Morton s report as against crrtain pronosals of Mr. G. Lanchlan, tho assistant manager and eleotricol engineer, vim considered that the Harris Street fetation could bo improved at a cost of inßG,sflfl, plus (in qxtja 419,000 for a sub-station at Crawford Road.

■ A proposal by Councillor W. H. Bennett that, in view of differences of opinion, tho experts be invited to tender fresh advice to tho council, was negatived by 10 votes to 7.
