WATERSIDERS' TROUBLE SETTLED

WORK RESUMED YESTERDAY.

The trouble which occurred on tho waterfront on Wednesday in connection with the handling of tho Port Kcmbla, coal on the Port Nicholson was settled at a stop-work meeting of tho Waterside Workers', Union held in X shed at 8 o'clock yesterday morning. Tho men engaged to shift the coal from tho hold of tho vessel .to. her bunkers refused on their own initiative to handle tho coal unless granted an extra 3d. per hour "dirt money m addition to the usual 3d. per hour paid, making llw amount claimed (id. Those men refused to submit their demand to tho Disputes Committee, an action not in accordance witli the terms of tho watcrsidcrs' agreement nnd opposed,. it Is stated, to tho wishes of the executive of the union* Tho employers of labour on tho wharves refused to employ any more labour until tho men agreed to submit their demand to the committee. Mr. L. Glover presided over the meeting of the union yesterday, nt which there was a full attendance of members. After discussion it was decided that the men concerned should return to work and that tho question of extra pay should bo submitted to the Disputes Committee, which was what the employers wanted tho men to do. At a meeting of the committee held after the mass mooting, it was decided that an extra 3d. should bo raid for handling tho Port Kembla coal, which was held to bo "dirtier" than other coal. This-- was referred to the National Disputes Committee, who will decide whether or nofGd. per hour should bo paid. Work was resumed by tho men. who had already beon engaged immediately after the inoeting. and at ono o'clock labour was engaged to work tho vessels which had come in sinco it was decided to ceaso operations. During tho afternoon work proceeded on all vessels in port. Tho Wa'iino did not sail for Lyttelton last night, but the Maori, whioh' arrived in the morning and berthed nt Taranuki Sfcreot Wharf, left at 7.05 p.m. for tho south. The Wahine will sail to-night and tho service •will Is run as usual.
