A PERPLEXING STATEMENT
-Sir,—l read with interest the Eev. Dr. Gib'b's somewhat orratio -story of his visit' to America. ' This sentence, however, pulled me up with a jolt: "It is certainly a startling fact thtit Jesus, Christ, tho supreme creative personality of human history, would havo to pay, 111 New Zealand, a poll tax before being permitted to land on our shores." Tho question is: Is this statement■ true? Jes'iiß Christ -Was a Jew; havo Jews to pay a poll tax? Would Jesns Christ bo a'n alien to a Christian country? I am. ready to admit that if Jesus Christ came to Wellington, and did the tilings hero that Ho did in Palestine, our Pharisees would say, as they did then; that Ho was a friend of publicans aiid sinner?, and would generally revile and despiso flim. I am rather perplexed about Dr. 'Gibb's statement, and I would like you, if you would, to elucidate tho matter for mo and other perplexed readers or vour Dominion.—l am, etc., PUZZLED. TTh'o Immigration Restriction Act requires tlCat immigrante not of British or Irish birth or parentage shall write out tho words of a proscribed .torn in any European language.—Editor,' Dominion.]
