GRANTS TO TERRITORIALS

PROPOSAL FOE 'ABOLITION. Matters connected with: the maintenance grant to Territorial .and Senior Cadet companies will bo discussed at a meeting of group and unit commanders, end Adjutants, which will bo held at district headquarters, Palmerston North, to-day. Under the Financial Regulations, a maintenance giant of 10s. per year is payable in respect to every efficient member of a Territorial unit, and 2s. 6d. per year in respect to efficient Senior Cadets. The money may bo expended by units In tho purchase of extra stationery, cleaning materials, extra appliances for camps, purchase of band instruments, payment of entrance fees for military tournaments or shooting competitions, engraving of medals, cups, etc., or upon any puvposo which, in the opinion of ,the commandant, will bo of military benefit to the unit, and for which no provision has been made on the Parliamentary appropriation. A ; proposal is on foot in 6ome quarters to' have the grant abolished on tho ground; that it is liable to lead to extravagant ei-penditure, but the opinion of Territorial officers is wholly in the direction of having tho grant retained, and it is 'anticipated that this viow will find freo support at to-day's conference.
