HOUSES AT KAIWARRA

CITY COUNCIL AND RAILWAY DEPARTMENT. Some time was spent by the City CouncU last night in discussing matters pertaining to the erection of houses by tho Railway Department at Kaiwarra. When the matter was before the council several months ago, exception -was taken to the manner in which tho Railway Department was constructing a road • giving access to some of the houses, and councillors expressed the opinion that unless the Department complied with the city by-laws the council' should refuse to connect the houses with the water supply. Subsequently, a deputation from the council waited on the Minister of 'Railways CRt. Eon. W. I\ Mnssey) with reference to the matter, and Mr. Massey replied that no doubt a satisfactory, arrangement would be come to between tho council and the officers of the Railway Department. At last night's meeting of the_ council, Councillor J. Hutchison asked if it was n fact that a compromise had Ireen arranged botween the council and the Department, and that the water supply was beinj laid on to tho houses. The Mavor (Mr. J. P. Luke) stated that "in the interests of humnnity" and in order to allow a family to take up residence, one house on the main road was being connected with the eeptio tank at Kaiwarra and water was _to bo laid on. The septic tank at Kaiwarra was already overburdened, and the City Engineer would not agree to any other house but the one roferred to being'conliectcd up. Tho council was prepared to allow the Railway Department to get water, but no other houses would be allowod to be connected with tho septio tank. • • '

Councillors wanted to know whether any Hunt; had beon done with regard to the road, and tho Mayor replied that no action had been taken on this matter. Councillor P. Eraser: Cannot the council protest against the kind of buildings that tho Railway Department are erecting at Kaiwarra? They are nothing but kennels. Councillor M. F. Luckie: Hear, hear, Tiiev are characteristic of Government work. Beyond accepting the Mayors statement regarding the house or tho mnin road, the council did not consider the matter further. <
