What tue puono is puzzled about' is that tho price of potatoes in quarter lots and upwards here is-at the .rate, of about £16 per' ton or more, Mr. Mussey, when these facts' vcro brought to his notice yesterday, said that he had already directed tho Hoard of trade to make inquiries into the retail prices .charged in Wellington, He 6 aid that he knew that there had'been, extraordinarily good crops of potatoes grown in Canterbury this year, and. he had no doubt that there would be a surplus- for expoiw There seemed to l? a gcod market for them in Australia, bui the Australian-- Government would not allow them to be imported cm account of the blight being prevalent in this country. His own" opinion 'was that there was no risk, and in any cose there was potato blight in Australia as well as in this country.
