PILLION RIDING
VIEWS OP MOTOR-CYCLISTS. The proposal that the Ciiy Council Bhould pas 9 a by-law prohibiting pillion ri'ding on motor-cycles was discussed by a deputation from the Wellington MotorCyolo Club which waited on the council last night. On behalf of the clnb, Mr. 0. Tanner said that the view taken V motor-cyclists was that motor-car riding was a "rich man's privilege," and thnt motor-cycling was a "poor man's occupation." Wero pillion riding prohibits, motor-cvclistb would be. denied the privilege of taking their friends for pleasure rides. Cases of accident when pillion' riding took place were very few. Ee btod heard of a case in England where f. man had fallen off a motor-cycle because he fell asleep, but that did not prove tnat pillion riding was dangerous. To prove that pillion riding was safe, there were members of his club who were prepared to take members, of the council for test Tides. The Mayor:'We don't want to lose any of our councillors. (Laughter,) Continuing, Mr. Tanner said thht pillion riding prevented motor-cyclists from travelling at rapid speeds; it tended to respectability and decent riding along our public streets. 'The Sydiwy City Council had prohibited pillion riding, but had afterwards roscinded its by-law relating to the suppression of the practice. In ■ view of this fact, it was hoped that the Wellington City Council would not enact any hiasty by-law on iJne subject In reply to Counoillor M. F. Luckie, Mr. Tanner said his club was prepared to recognise that pillion riding should be restricted to certain streets at busy times ° The Mayor stated that the By-laws Committee would do nothing hasty, and would give the representations if the club every consideration.
