CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUND
AT TEE RIGI. Tho Director of Reserves (Mr. J. MacKenzie) reported to the City Council on tho subject of .a recreation ground at the Eigi (Karori Road) as follows:— "There is sufficient fairly level ground to form one tennis court or croquet lawn on tho land in question. I am, however, strongly of the opinion that to use it for this purposo would be a great mistake. It would only bo used bv a few adults two or threo afternoons per week during n port .of the year. This is the only level piece of ground in a well-populated part of the towji, and is next door to a school without a playground. I havo, therefore, to recommend that it be improved and kept for the use of tho children of the neighbourhood for ball games, etc. Tho flat will require to be drained and U>vdrossed, also a fonce erected near the tramline. Tho western slope will require to bo planted with trees, etc. Taking or forming tho only piece of level ground and using i' f° r 'be exclusive use of tho few is never a success. Tho Mein Street croquet lawn is a case in point. The Croquet Club object to tho children using tho ground in any way. The children having no other level ground in tho neighbourhood will persist in going on to tho ground on Sundays, evenings, etc., and tho consequence is constant friction and damage to the greens. I, therefore, recommend that tho Rigi bo improved in tho way suggested and kept as a children's playground." The report wa6 approved.
