Sir Arnold Gridley, who was Director of the Electric Power Department of tho Munitions Council in England during the war, is a visitor to Wellington. His visit to Now Zealand is combining business with pleasure. A Press Association telegram from Wanganui states that Councillor T. B. Williams was last night elected to fill tho position of Mayor, rendered vacaut by' the resignation of Mr. C. E. Mackay. Councillor Richardson wa6 elected Deputy-Mayor. Brigadier-General Raymond Lionel Leano, C.8., C.M.G., D.5.0., M.C., Croix do Guerre, lias been appointed Commissioner of Polico in South Australia as from July 1 next, in succession to Mr. T. Edwards, who is retiring rnder tho provisions of the Police Pensions Act. General Leane is among tho most distinguished of the Australian officers who fought in the war. Referring at yesterday's conference of tho Fanners' Union to tho loss sustained lately through the death of Mr. W. J. Birch, provincial president, Mr. G. L. Marshall said that Mr. Birch was one of the original founders of the union, and his mature judgniont and broad outlook were of great value on mouy occasions. A true gentleman iu every seuso of the word, ho died as he lived, loved i and respected by all who know him. ,A Press Association message from Syd ney 6tates that M. Henri Yerbrugghon,. conductor of tho New South Wales State Orchestra, lias abandoned outside offers and will remain in Sydney. The Government will shortly consider terms. The death has occurred at Nelson of Mr. Robert Waddell Reid, who was acting sub-editor of tho "Colonist" up to the time of that journal ceasing publication. Deceased was ill but a short time, and death was duo to bronchitis. The late' Mr. Reid, who was 61 years of -age, was a Scottish journalist. He spent a considerable period in South Africa. Mr. C. J. Ward, vice-president of the Wellington Industrial Association, ha 9 returned to Wellington from a visit to Australia. Mr. C. E. Smith, tho Wellington general manager for New Zealand for tho Alliance Assurance Company, who left by the Mnkura some weeks ago with tho intention of making a lengthy stay in California for the benefit of his health, returned to the Dominion by the same steamer, reaching Auckland last Sunday. His many friends will bo sorry to learn that there is little or no improvement in his condition.
Mr. C. M. Tun-ell, local manager for the New Zealand Snipping Company, left by the Maori last night for Lyttcllon. Ho expects to return on Thursday.
