HUTT BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OP THE COUNCIL,

Tlu fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. E. P. Rishworth) presiding. There were also present Councillors A-'J- Hobbs, A. J. West, W. Hardy, W. Knight, and W. Meldrum. , The district engineer, Public Works Department, wrote asking for the council'o decision concerning the plans, of the Waiwetu Bridge, Hall-Jones Settlement.—On the motion of the Mayor it was decided that the council's approval be given. A letter was received from the District Health Officer urging that stei*' bo' taken to have necessary structural alterations made to premises in Railway Avenue.—Tho borough solicitor informed the council that it tad no responsibility in the matter, and it was resolved that tho solicitor's opinion be forwarded to the Health Department. Tho town clork, Petor.e, intimated that owing to the poor quality of coal available, the gas pressure had had to be reduced again, and he requested that every alternate gas lamp only be lighted until further notice—lt was decided to comply with the request. The contract of Mr. F. Jennesa for attending to the Post Office clock was renewed for a further twelve months at the same rate as hitherto. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor Hobbs, to refuse the application of the Wellington Rugby Union for permission to take up a colfection on the recreation ground on every Saturday—savo' tho six on which a cliargo is to bo made —during the season in aid of tho Hutt Football Club gymnasium fund The secretary of the Hutt Valley Hookey Club wrote requesting perinis sion to use the new portion of the Becreation Ground.—lt was stated that tho portion had not yet been completed, and difficulty wu being experienced in obtaining labour for the, work. The, matter was left in the hands of the engineer.
