A NEW ZEALAND SHRINE
Some time ago a movement was started in London to raise funds for the erection of a memorial-chapel, ns an annexe to the Memorial Cathedral that the New Zealanders are erecting themselves (states the "British Australasian", of March 25). This was to be the gift of the Mother Country, ns a "tangible expression of the love of the mother for her children across the seas." Unfortunately, this noble ideal has not received the financial support that was expected, and a fresh appeal has been, made through the "Times' for funds. The Rev. C. P. Askew, Hib organising secretary of the movement, points out that there will be certain special features in the Military Chapel which will make, it unique, including, amongst others, small Maori, South AM* can, and Gallipoli (or Anzac) chapels; Samoa, CTaTlipoli, Prance, Flanders, B°vpt, Palestine, Mesopotamia, and South African windows; perpetuating the military campaigns in which the Zealanders have been identified; and tho names of all the New Zealanders (nearly 17 000) who made tho supreme saerifico in the Groat War and the South African and Maori campaigns, inscribed in letters of "old. The chapel will also contain colours of the Allies, historic (tags, and trophies, and Field-Marshal Foch - has most courteously presented tlie standard which served with him in the 1918 campaign. Field-Marshals Haig and Plunier, mid Generals Rawlinson, Birdwood, and Biybington have sent flags or trophies, while Field-Marshal French;- Generals Bvng, Sir lan ■ Hamilton, and Pershing, aiid Admiral Weinyss, have promised to sand them. It may be hoped, that an undertaking of this clmractor will not fail through the lack of a few thousaiid ncuiids One can readily join with tne promoters in hope Unit the will yet bo raised in time to cable tie news during the visit of the Prince to the Dominion. In this material world of oum the calls for an idealistic enterprise of this kind are not too frequent, and the response should, therefore, be as gwierous.n9 possible.
