MAGISTRATE'S COURT
William Williams, who pleaded guilty on Friday Inst to a cha ga. of attempted suicide, and who was remanded for sentence, appeared in the Magistrate's Court before' Mr. E. Page, S.M., yesterday. The excuse, given by Williams when, before Uie Court' last week was ': that he 'iiadbcfii suffe:ing from mental worry owing to family troubles, and that an application for a maintenance order was being brought' against him. Mr. W. G. Mulish,- who napeared for Mrs. Williams, said that the application for a maintenance order would be withdrawn if the accused returned home and submitted to a prohibition .order.' On the charge-, of. attempted suicide Williams was convicted and ordered to' come up for sentence when called upon Within', a .period of three years, and to abstain from liquor for that pe'.iod, A prohibition order was issued against him. He was also ordered to pay lOs/ costs,
Herbert Henry Workman.! the 'journeyman tailor who ha<l pi eaded 1 guilty to ob=£18 by-falsely representing that .his wife had died in the Hospital, also came up for sentence. The Magistrate characterised the pretence of the accused as*a sliabby.one, and the only thing that could be sflid in his favour was that 'he borrowed the money and did not steal it. On the first charts Workman was admitted tp probation for a period of three years, to report weekly to the Probation Officer during tliat period, and .to repay the money borrowed at the rate of 10s. per week. A prohibition order was is-" sued against him. On the other charges he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. A remand for one week was granted in the case of Albert Henry Fitzgerald, for whom Mr. A,. B. Sievwriglit appeared, who was chawed witlh the theft of one bottle of whisky, value 10s., the propel ty of the Union^Steam Ship. Company. Bail was allowed in his own recognisance of £20, For using obscene language in Lambton Quay, James Troy was fined .£3, in default seven days' imprisonment. ✓ For committing a bench of his prohibition order, Lionel George Hood was fined <£1, with the option of three days' imprisonment, and for being drunk he was fined as. • \ '•
