HIDE AND TALLOW SALES

Sales of hides and tallow were held on Friday by the various brokers. Messrs. Dalcety and Co. report :-There was a cood attendance. of buyers, and competition was quite keen for all linea of medium and heavy hide.?, trices hems; a shado firmer than at pale '-'t April V). American demand, there was a further doclino in the market for ull sortu, except os. Comnared with the values current at llio sale held a manth ago. cow hides showed a decline irrespective of weight and condition of from Id', to 13d. per lb. whilst kip and yearling were from id. to lid. per lb. lower. Calfskins were from 3d. to 7d. per lb. lower. Tho tallow market was quiet, with very little inauiry. and bußinesß was only possible at a decline of from 6s. to 12s. per cwt., as compared with last sale ratlee. , Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co. submitted a catalogue of 1400 hides. '00 yearlingß and kin, and 260 ealfskius. Tho offering of hides comprised some choice lots, in superior condition, which elicited keen competition. Compared with last sale, tho market showed a much firmer tone for heavy and medium, ox. with a lower tendency in cows, licht-weiKhte, yearlings, and calfskins. Inferior and damapjid lots of the better, descriptions ■ suffered severely. Tallow showed a decline of 7s. to Bs. per cwt. in casks, and up to 10b. in tinned lots. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency 00., Ltd., report that tanr.ers took the bull: of the best hides and calfsliius. Prices were if anything a. shade Ir.rner than last Bale for the best hidoß, but damaged lots wcro slightly lower. Toll-w was ueaieetcd. and many lots were passed. Mesßrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd.. offered a large catalogue of aJI classes. Bidding was keen at a higher range of values comnared with last sales with the exception of tallow, which was very :'ull of sale. Oow hides were lower by about Id., yearlings and kips were slisrhtly lower in price, and were lowc; ly about 2d. per lb., thou!* in i-oine Instances, for gamS lines, last priocfi were reached. Tallow all round was about 10s. per cwt. lower.
