HIDE AND TALLOW SALES

Sales of hides and tallow were held on Friday by the various brokers. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co. submitted a catalogue of 1400 hides. '00 yearlingß and kin, and 260 ealfskius. Tho offering of hides comprised some choice lots, in superior condition, which elicited keen competition. Compared with last sale, tho market showed a much firmer tone for heavy and medium, ox. with a lower tendency in cows, licht-weiKhte, yearlings, and calfskins. Inferior and damapjid lots of the better, descriptions ■ suffered severely. Tallow showed a decline of 7s. to Bs. per cwt. in casks, and up to 10b. in tinned lots. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency 00., Ltd., report that tanr.ers took the bull: of the best hides and calfsliius. Prices were if anything a. shade Ir.rner than last Bale for the best hidoß, but damaged lots wcro slightly lower. Toll-w was ueaieetcd. and many lots were passed. Mesßrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd.. offered a large catalogue of aJI classes. Bidding was keen at a higher range of values comnared with last sales with the exception of tallow, which was very :'ull of sale.
