MAGISTRATE'S COURT

JKmos Miliar 'pleaded guilty to Itho theft of an overcoat valued at £5 155., the property of Hope Bros. Tho accused, who is a labourer, a married man with four children, whilo under the influence of liquor took an 'overcoat from outside tho shop of Hope Bros., in Cuba Street, and then went inside the shop and purchased two handkerchiefs. The manager became suspicious when tho man left the shop, and sent an assistant to bring him back. Tho man was eventually handed over to the police. Millar was fined £10, in default one month's imprisonment. Joseph Ooyle was fined 10b. for being found drunk in Adelaide Road, and for using obscene language when prevented by a tram conductor from boarding a tramcar from the wrong side, ho was fiued £5 and costs, in default seven days' imprisonment. Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell appeared for the accused, and said that tho man was suffering considerable mental worry. He had received a telegram from his wife announcing the death of their child, and he came into town from Trentham with tho object of obtaining some money to go home with, but found ho was too late for tho bank. Ho asked that Ooyle be treated leniently. William Campbell, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Leary appeared, pleaded guilty to the theft of a pair of shoes, valued at 35b., from tho s.s. Manuka, tho property of the Union S.S. 00. The police gavo the accused a good character, and stated that he was a first offender. . Campbell was sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment. Convicted of drunkenness for tho second time, Oeorgo Robertson Corrigall was lined 10b., with tho option of 48 hours' imprisonment.
