MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr..E. Page, S.M., was on the bench at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Convicted of his fourth 'offence for drunkenness, John Flamiagan was lined 205., in default threo days. The. Magistrate suggested that a prohibition order would help him to straighten up, but Flannagan said, "If you givo me a chance I will take a .pull."
Maggie Walsh, who was found haplessly drunk in Haining Street, was ordered to pay 17s. Gd. medical expenses. D. Hickey and L. Lnmberg, two young fellows, were convicted of throwing stones, and also with darnasing the roof of a house in Island Bay. On the 'alter charge they were each fined 20s. and costs 195., and on the charge of throwing' stones they were each ordered to pay Court costs. J. Boyce was charged with committing a breach of tho peace, and as there were extenuating circumstances he was convicted and discharged. • Three young men named G. Browne, A. M. Carroll, and B. Bonner were convicted of using threatening behaviour whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned, and were each fined 20s. and costs Bs. Thomas Ham, a tobacconist, was charged with selling cigarettes to a boy under 15 years of age, and C. J. Hannah and C. M. Hodge were charged with aiding and,abetting in the sale. It appeared that Hannah and Hodge were at tlie 1 Athletic Park on May 1, and asked the lad. to get them some cigarettes. The lad went to Ham's shop and bought' the cigarettes. Ham was convicted nnd lined 20s. and costs, nnd Hannah and Hodge wero ordered to pay Bs. Bd. each, costs only. A barman at the Albion Hotel named. IT. Hefforon was charged with permitting ."shouting." The facts were that two youths went into the 'hotel, and on" 'asked for a "shandy" and r/aced 1"" on tho counter, while the barman's ret was turned gottiug t'lio liquor. Tto second youth then asked for his drink.. When the barmnn collected the money the coins wore apart. Mr. IT. F. O'Lr-.uy. who appeared for the defendant, pointed but that Hefferon wag not a party to the affair. He did not "knowimrly" assent to the breach. The Magistrate dismissed tho information on tho ground that there was not sufficient evidence to convict. Wah Chong, for whom Mr. Af. F. Luckionppeared, was charged on the information of Captain Henry, Inspector for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, with ill-treating a horse. After hearing evidence, the afagistrate recorded a conviction and fined the Chinaman ,£2 nnd costs.
