HATAITAI AFFAIRS
SCHOOL. TUNNEL. AND PLAYGROUNDS. The tenth annual report of the Hntait.ii Municipal Electors' Association states that during the past year, as a result of continuous and active agitation, additions have been made to tho Hataitai School, but it is obvious that iu .1 very Bliort timo it will be necessary to have an infant school erected. In regard to tho proposal to cut a now tunnel through Mount Victoria, the report says that the disabilities under which some 10,000 people arc labouring have become so acuto that the authorities are now compelled to seek some means of Riving hotter access to the districts on tho east side of Mount Victoria. A reply from the City Council to certain representations placed before that body is iiow awaited. "During the year," continues tho report, "at the suggestion of your association, the City Council purchased the sections right opposite the bathing-shed, and it is understood that during the present season the council will set to work to beautify and make a proper playground of this particular piece of ground. In this connection it is a matter of great regret that there are no_ playgrounds for the children, in Hataitai. At the present time the children are playing in tho streets for want of a better place, although there are still one or two places that could be acquired by the City Council for a playground. This is one of tho matters that requires the earnest attention of the incoming committee."
