PETROLEUM SUPPLIES
STEPS TO SAFEGUARD BRITISH INTERESTS. London, May 19. The British Government intends to .safeguard British interests in regard to the nece&sibility of petroleum supplies, and is taking steps to make the Army and Navy independent of United States supplies in any future war. The Government regards Mr. Wilson's leport as nnthßritish in tone, and -unnecesr garily theatrical, and characterises the Standard Oil Company's complaint of unfair play as peculiarly audacious from the viewpoint of tho ruthless policy th.it, the company lias pursued for forty years—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. OUTPUT FROM UNITED STATES. Washington, May 19.' According to Government statistics the United States oil-producing fields have been exhausted to the extent of 10 per cent.
