THE MAN WHO SAVED EUROPE
A STORY OP THE PEACE CONFERENCE. A story of the inner life of the Peaco Conference was told bv the Primo Minister (Right Hon. W. F. Massey) at the annua! dinner of the Dental .Association last night. Mr. Massey expressed his admiration for M. Clemenccau, as tho strong man who had done much to save Europe. There had been a time when the Conference seemed to be making no progress, and many of the delegates were anxious to get to their homes. Soino delegates met Si. Cleinenceau outsido the Conference chamber, and they said to him: "Whv don't you end this? You know that we are doing no good, The Germans arc gaining on us every day. Whv not close it up and let us go homo ?" The reply of M. Cleinenceau was: "Gentlemen, I am not keeping you hero. I have on my right hand a man who thinks himself to bo Napoleon. I have on my left hand n man who thinks himself to be the Son of Man. How can I let you go?" (SI. Cleinenceau was President of the 'Conference, and had Dr. Woodrow. Wilson on his right hand and Mr. Lloyd George on his left.) "1 have always regretted," added Mr. Mr.ssov, "that the people of Franco did not make M. Cleinenceau President of tho Republic, when they had the opportunitv.' I believe honestly that ono of thoso fancy schemes of election of which wo have heard so much was twisted and distorted so as to make his election imncssible. History will not forget him. Ho saved France. I think it is not too much to sav that he saved Europe. If it. had no 1 ' been for M. Clcmoncean I don't think that the war would have been won when it was won."
