'Mr. 0. If. Luke presided at a meeting Of. tho council of the Central Ohambcr of Commerce, hold yestorday afternoon. Tho ohairman, accorded a welcome to the new members of tho council, . Messrs. 11. Stookbridge and B. Simms. He apologised for Mr. J/L. Arcuß, who was' absent from •Wellington. . ' 'i ■In proposing Mr. A. Leigh' Hunt aB the new president, l Mr. 0. M. Luke nave ft resume of the work of the chamber during its seven - years of its : eiistonce, tho greater part of which was occupied by the, devastating war. He thanked thn council and past councils for tho assistance they had given him during his terms of office. The chamber had done splendid work—it had organised conferences of local bodies, which; had considered matters of great moment, and it' had given birth to tho Wellington Progressive League, that was doing such Jnagniflcent work for the community at large. He proposed Mr. A. Leigh Hunt as one who would be a worthy "president of the chamber. ■ Mr. Hunt oald that llr. Luke had clothed the chamber with digBits and ripe experience, and he even at that Into stage would ask him to reconsider his decision. Mr. Liiks was quite determined not to •tand again, and Mr. Hnnt was elected amidst applause. _Mr. Luke mentioned that the Central Chamber was the sccond largest chamber in New Zealand. .'Mr. Hunt said he thnucht the chamber had justified itself. It had assumed a broad outlook in taking into consideration the whole of the province;, .he wondered whether they nould not .be even broader than they had been in the past. The times were fraught with change nnd vast possibilities, and he hoped that tney i would develop the imagination and vision to take no ciuestlons that would be tor the benefit, not only of the community of Wellington, but of the .country and nation. In all matters they should endeavour to keep up to date. He also mentioned the desire of the chamber to secure premises, of its own.. Mr. H. Hart was elected vice-presi-dent.
