Mrs. E. Qibbs is visiting Dunedin,

Mr. George Bnrltrop, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Barltrop. returned to Wellington by the Hemuera last week. During his absence from New Zealand, Mr. BiiHtro!) has held an important position at Harland and Wolffe's at Belfast, and through the war period was engaged Oil special work in the turbine construction sho'p at Vickers-Maxim's works. Barrow-in-i'iiniDss. Mr. Barltrop is accompanied by his wife, and little daughter, and intends to make his homa in New Zealand.

A pleasing ceremony took place at tho I'etone Borough Council's offices on Saturday afternoon, when the'staff met. to make a .presentation to Miss Broekleluiik, who is leaving the employ of tho council to be married. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan), in handing Miss Brocklebank an oak clock and silver cake fork, made reference to the high esteem in which the recipient was held by ■ her fellow-workers and the council,* and wished her every happiness in her married life. Councillor C. P. Brocklebank .replied on behalf of his daughter. Afterwards Mr. and Miss Brocklcbank entaincd the staff at afternoon tea.

■ Sirs. Dixon, who lias been staving with her sister, Mrs. W.'Blundell, returned to Marton yesterday.

Pi'l-ei' Warner, of the staff of the Trentham Military Hospital, returned home on Monday on sick leave.

_A meeting of the Mothers' Helt> Division ot the 'Women's National Eeijervo was he'd last week. Mrs. Corliss was in the chair, in the absence of the president, Mrs. J. 'Darling. The report which v-as received of'the work whir.h is being dono 4>y the" visiting helpers showed how great was the need for providing help to mothers of families. The report of the rest room in Courtenay Place showed that up to' the end of April 147 mothers and '-n Mkl veiled the room, and on one day alone there had been 43 mothers md their children, who made it their headquarters-for a time. As. the room •becomes nmre known its advantages are availed of increasing numbers of mothers. There is no doubt but that tliero is need for other, rest rooms for the use ..of mothers in other localities. ■ ASSISTANCE IN THE HOME HOUSEHOLD ORDERLIES. A meeting of the Household Orderly Association recently/formed in\We!lington with a view to "d6ing something to solve the domestic help problem was held-in. the Pioneer Club yesterday afternoon. Dr. Agnes Bennett was voted io the chair, and there were also present Lady Stout, My Findlay, Miss Greenwood, Mrs. L. 0. 11. Tripp, Mrs. Ernest lladfield, Mrs.. ■A. Crawford, Mrs. Porter, Mrs Corliss, Mrs. L. Nelson, Mrs. Henry Hall.' and Mrs. !H. Kirkealdie. • Dr. Bennett outlined to the meeting the offer thai had been received through! Messrs.- Gray and Cracroft (Auckland) of the property known as Bishopscourt, at Kelburn. .This property had been offered at a rental of £100 a year, with a purchasing clause of £5200; ,£SOO to be paid down and the remainder at G per cent, for five years. • . Lady Stout expressed the opinion that it was too far out of town, and that the girls would not care to live there in consequence. . Some discussion followed, and it was pointed out that with the Kelburn cable service the place was no distance' from the city, also that it would be within easy .reaoh of Karori, Tinakori Koad, The Terrace, Northland; etc:, 'all-- places-which would : oft'er much scone for the activities of the residents-of the hostel, although it was not proposed to limit them to . those districts. Mrs. Corliss pointed out that if the girls who became household orderlies went into the work imbued' with the spirit of those who worked as 'visiting helpers' for the Mothers HelpDivision of the W.N.R., they would not allow distance from town to deter them, if such distance did exist. In any case . there was no selection, as it was the only place possible for such a purpose. Mrs. I'otfer seconded Mrs. Corliss s remarks. ■ Dr. Bennett stated that its time went on a good many girls and ivomen would be arriving from Great Britain, and their numbers would in all probability include several who had belonged io the W.A.A.U, the W.R.A.F., and other bodies of organised'women, who would.be ready, to go in for this work and so supplement the numbers of-New Zealand women, should not enough of the latter come forward.. In . any case, she did not think there need be any fears as to the nnancwl aspect of the hostel, as failing the household orderlies thley would always-be, able to fill the, hostel with Training CoV lego students 'and girls anxious, to comato town to attend the University. At the Women Students' Hostel they had to. refuse mnny applicants for admission owing to lack of accommodation, thari at least, was perfectly certain; failing the one the hostel could be filled with students, so that its financial standing was assured. It was further stated that the Union Bank had agreed to. an overdraft up to the amount guaranteed. . ■■ Mrs. Porter moved that the asociation should become an incorporated society, whioh was agreed to.- In the society would 'be included all present at Ihfl meeting, with -the additipn of Mrs. L. Gibbs and Mrs. Elliott, neither of whom was able to be present that afternooix. In further discussion regarding . Kelburn property, Dr. Bennett stated that Mr. ,W. Ferguson had gone oyot 1 the place, and had expressed, the i pinion that the offer made was a. good one. It was finally .moved and cavried that subject to professional advice, the p auo lie acquied. - The guarantors that hadcome forward are Mr. W. Ferguson,. Dr.. Agnes Bennett, Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Nelson, Dr. Platts-Miljs. . It was decided that the association should endeavour to raise an amount of XISOO for furnishing, subscriptions, to W • solicited for this purpose. The financial advisors to the association ai-e Bii"'ott, Ferguson, Nelson, and S. lurk* The'hostel for the household orderlies will provide accommodation for M, including the staff, and they will be a«V« ' to pav at the rato of 235. a week. Hia rate of pay to an order y is expec rd to be '42s a week, though this apparently ltj not vet fully decided upon, and is subject io certain conditions. With their ( lterience of the. Students Hostel and its management to draw upon, those .members of the Household Orderlies' Assoc-.* tion who are also members of the Shidents' noslel Council have been able to arrive at a good working Iwsis as to tho running of,a hostel for the household orderlies.
