DIM LIGHTS
Sir,—lt is not very satisfying, the statement made by Mr. Lauchlan, electric lighting engineer. One or'two aspect) of the case I would like to 'touch on. Why are the suburbs denied light on their streets, and the city streets lit up the.<e last few nights, not to speak of the low power light in nrivate dwellings? The district of Kolburn and adjacent districts are penalised these nighti up to about 8 o'clock. To my mind th' electric lighting department of tho city has not very carefully considered the approach of winter. To go back to the summer months'when'somo of. us were winding our way homewards from work about 4 a.m. in broad day ' light, the street. lamps were burning away, and 1 have seen them after this hour alight. Surely this was the timeto , save some good coal. • Now, as regards street lighting, why penalise one district Ho light up another? What 1 : would suggest is to cut out about one- : half of the street lights by- a simple pnP cess of removing the ekctric light bulbs. Tins should save a lot of current and give ad entitled to street lights somo recompense.' It is surely better to have a few' tliaii none at all. Then another aspect of the difficulty, pnd to all appearance on the* increase, nightwork: This should bo ciit down •as much as possible in tho winter months. Larjje consumers of current should try and assist the, city by cutting down as much as possible.—l; am, etc., ■ ■ ..' THOMAS M. MILLIGAN. . Ma/ 15' 1920. -
