RAILWAY RETURNS
FIGURES FOR 1919-20 BIG INCREASES IN TRAFFIC ADVANCING EXPENDITURE The railway returns for the financial year ended March 31 last are published in the Gazette. They show that tlie revenue of tho Government, railways during the rear amounted to .£5,752,437 and the expenditure to, .£4.105,067. The proportion of expenditure, to revenue was 71.36- per cent., as against 66.32 for last year. The details of the Railway working ac count were as follow:— * Revenue. Total Miles open to date. The number nf season tickets increased from 351,124 to 400.621. ~ , The stock carried by the railways during the year numbered 7,674,532. an increase of 636,228. Tho goods traffic increased by 358.775 tons, the total for the year being 5.597.232 tons. Minerals, included in this total, showed a. decrease of 143,247, due to the reduced production of coal from the mines.
