' The Methodist General Conference, sitting at Sydney, decided, in view of /tho increased cost of living, .to increase supernumerary ministers and ministers' widows' annuities by 25 per cent., and the furniture grant by 50 per cent, iiA n^on "Times" message states that tho Oxford Convocation passed without opposition a statute providing for tho matriculation and admission of women. The Cambridge authorities aro divided whether to take similar action or establish a separate university. j Giving evidence before a Select Committee of the Federal Hoii6e of Representatives on 6ea carriage,, tho secretary of tho Commonwealth Steamship Owners' Association stated that the increased cost of coal and wages since the Commonwealth requisitioned tho inter-State ships in 1918 amounted/ to per annum. The South African House of Assembly, by 68 to 47, granted leave for the introduction of a private Bill extending the franohise to women. General Smuts, while strongly infavour of the principle, said it was desirable that the matter should be dealt with on party lines, and therefore the_ Government oould not father the Bill. He urged the House •to give the Bill a chance. In the, Federal House of Representatives, Sir Joseph Cook (Minister for the Nnvy) stated 1 that tho expenditure on repatriation this year would amount to ,£19,250,000, and would increase next year to .£21,000,000. Fresh ''loan moneys, amounting to <£30,000,000 would have to be raised. The outlook was about as serious as it could "be, but tho financial position was sound. The Berlin correspondent of the United Press reports that the Germans will not withdraw from the Spa Conference because of tho alleged attacks on German girls French black troops in the Frankfurt district. _ The correspondent adds that the Berlin Press is furious, alleging that many,girls have vanished and been ravished in houses filled with under-age girls maintained for the troops.
