PRISONERS SENTENCED
NEWBERRY GIVEN FIVE . YEARS: ■ His Honour Mr,. Justice Hsrdmnn sentenced ' several prisoners ■ yesterday morning : Mi'. I'.. S. K.. Macassey appeared for tlio Crown. 'James. Newberry,- who had assaulted ft Mrs : Cooper and her sister, Miss Skjotb,. with an iron bar, was' sent to prison-for five years. His counsel, Mr. A. B. Sievwright, pleaded in extenuation of the offence that Newberry had gained the Military Medal at: tho t front, and had undergone the; - severest physical suffering- as the. J'esult of . his war services. His .Honour: "Nothing will justify the conduct, of any man who ".during the uight goes into ;i house, grabs a'woman by the throat and when she gets out of bed in her nightgown, beats her with an iron bar. This, man attacked noi only ono' woman, but another also. The nssiiult is ono of the most serious to come under my notice." Benjamin Henry -'Bright, -convicted of assaulting Robert; M'Nab, who died immediately after the assault, was - told by His' Honour that he should- con- ; 6ider himself fortunate. in not having b£en convicted of . manslaughter. He received a sentence of 12 months' hard iabour.. . . . ■ ■■ ■ John "Henry Morgan, who hail- 110 ; previous convictions, :vvas sentenced to : a-year's imprisonment with .hard labour for having broken and entered the premises •of the D.I.C. with intent to commit a crime. • ' Harry Handle, for whom Mr. H. F. O'lieaiy appeared, had been convicted of assaulting Mary Pake so as to 'cause h'erinctual bodily harm. He was sentenced to hard -labour for a term of 18 months, and was led,from the dockin tears. • • • . / • Theresa Russell had pleaded guilty to stealing front the person. She had a very ' long list of previous -convictions for various offences,- but- Mr- P.. W. Jackson urged on her-'behalf that.those convictions were not for dishonesty. She received a sentence of .18 months' hard labour. ; .VHuir Harry Hart, convicted of in-, decent assault upon a little, boy, wassentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labour. His Honour .took into, consideration the good characterthat Hart had borne up to the time of the offence. Robert Douglas said that when .he committed bigamy lie was under- the impression -that his wife was dead. He received a sentence of two. years' hard; labour. ■ ■ ■ ■. ' Harold Coley had been convicted of assault and robbery, committed upon Albert AV. Xirkland. Mr. 11. H. ; Cornish entered, a plea for leniency. His Honour considered the offence a very serious one. Prisoner had stunned and the a robbed itu intoxicated man. He would be sentenced , to' reformative treatment for three years.
