r . 0 A meeting of the Accountant Students' - Sooiety held last ovenine was presided bv. Mr. HciiTy D. Edwards in the unavoidable absenco from town of tne president, Mr. Ernest W. Hunt. Tho chairman intimated to members that tho annual public anealrin* competition tor the/ trophy donated by thfe president -would be ■ held in June. The principal business of the evening wag a lecture by Mr. F. G. . Cray, actiner-Kenoral manager o£ the Koyal Ewhanee Assurance Cornoration, entitled "Fire Insurances." Mr. uray, in mtrortuc-- , in? his subject, stated that no students of accounts could* afford to neglect a sound workinn knowledge of fire insurance, and that the large insurance corporations in New Zealand had played an important e part in the development of tho commerce 1 of the Dominion. The lecturer stated at n tho outßCt that an insurance policy was • not a wager, but an indemnification in tho event of a loss by fire, and that the policies of comuanies operating ir. New--0 Zealand were all uniform as to their cont ditions. Ho stated that it was very imy portant at the present juncture that (• Btudents Bhould romember that owing to £ Inoroased price of materials, the amount of loss was based on the, present value of a property, and not tho original cost., Mr. s Cray dwelt at lonptli with the question of [s reinsurances, double insurance, and the r principles iroverninsr tho assignments of 1 .policies. The lecturer was accorded a " hearty vote of thanks for his interesting " lecture. At the conclusion of tho meet> y ing the chairman announced that the next :o mnotinir would be held on Juno 2, whpn .- Professor B. B. Murphy, M.A., 1 LL,M„ would deliver & lecture on "The Currenoy Question."
