NOTES AND COMMENTS '

By Glencoe. At Egmont to-morrow racing will com- . mence at 11.10 a.m., when the first division of the Telegraph ■ Handicap will be run. Mr. E. S. Luttrell, who has been on a business visit to Sydney, returned to Wellington by the Manuka yesterday, and will go south to-night; By tho Wahine, which sailed for Lyttelton'last evening, tho racehorses Coalition, Seadown, and Mannish, in charge of J, \Y. Lowe, and Master Strowan and Gang Awa', in charge of P. J. Carmont, were shipped to Riccarton, where they , are to race at the Royal meeting on Saturday. 1 Mr. A. MTDonald, owner of Torfreda, Murihiku and Strategy, was a passenger by the Wahine la6t evening. He has „gone to Tiniaru to see his horses race" there on Thursday and Friday. At tho conclusion of tho racing at Timaru on Friday a special horse train will leave Washdyke Station, and run right through to Christchurch. This will snablo' the horses to bo raced at Riocarton on Saturday. Mr. George Hume, who has been on a holiday trip to Melbourne and Sydney, returned to Wellington by the Manuka yesterday. • • A recent visitor to the Dominion was '■ Mr. Alister Clarke, chairman of the ' Moonee Valley Racing Club, Mr. Clarke ■ attended'the Easter meeting at Riccar- > ton, and was much impressed with the performances of Sasauof, Arrowsmitli, 1 and, the two-year-olds, Right and Left 1 and Delight. In Auckland J. Williamson's horse, 1 No Surrender, is a firm order for the Great Northern Steeplechase, to be run \on June 3. \ ' 1 Just before his departure by the Niar gara, Mr. T. H. Lowry received advice \ that definite' arrangements had been ' made for the mating of Anrnrins to All " Black and Symbolism to Comedy King. \ and the mares will be shipped across to I Australia shortly. The reported salo of Egmont Park to the local trainer C. Pritchard has been cancelled, and the gelding is to remain , at Hawera. B. Deoley will go south to-night to' . ride R. J Mason's horses at Riccarton i on Saturday. I The full sister to Desert Gold, which ; is to race in the colours of P. Davis - during Mr. Lorry's absence in England, - has had the name of Aureate claimed i for her. ) It i 9 reported from Sydney that the - Beragoon—Volga colt, knocked dos-n to i Mr. .J Stewart for 250 guineas at the i recent Sydney yearling sales, was purI chased on behalf of Mr. G. D. Green- ' wood. The youngster should be in New ) Zealand by fthis time. 'An English trainer delivers himself «S> follows concerning hifl calling in England^ I and the same thing upplies elsewhere:— I "There is no easier profession to jump 1 into than that of A trainer. One has r only to buy two or three ,£lO horses, 6end ■ ,£1 to the right authorities for a license ' to train, and his new will appear in ' the sporting papers as a trainer. There ' is no sort of examination io pasis: it does 1 not even matter whether you can write J your own name or not; yon can bo a '' racehorse trainer very cheaply. This ' accounts for the numbers whioh hn're j sprung up during the last twenty years ; —three times as many as there were two ' decades Ago, But the swell trainer has the best chance, as he has the advantage of being in the position of dining \ with his wealthy friends and talkinpt i them into going in for keeping race- , horses; and in this way he soon gets • large strings of thoroughbreds of good . quality to train, whereas the poor man j trainer generally has to try his hand . at—making silk-purses out of sows' ears, | as thev say." i • Mr. W.'R. Kemball returned to Wei. , lington by the Manuka, which arrived from Sydney last evening. I K. Tucker, who did a lot of the Kernf ball riding, returned to Australia by tho. | Ulimaroa on Saturday. The climate did not agree with Tucker, but he intends to return to the Dominion in the spring.
