NOTES AND COMMENTS
(By Glencoe.) Tho Egmont meeting will be held on Wednesday and. Thursday next. C. Emerson, who arrived hack from England by the- Tofua this week, is quito restored to health. He was present at Ashburton yesterday, and next week will be riding at the Tiaiaru and C.J.C. meetings. L. Wilson, with Hetaua and Kohu, is oxpected at Wellington from Hastings to-night. He is on the way to the C.J.C. Royal Meeting, which will take place on Saturday of 'next week. King Albert, who has not been a great success on tho flat, is to bo schooled over the fences. In addition to liim F. Quinlivan is putting through his pacings at Hastings a gelding by Our King, who was bred in Gisborne. He is also welding into shape a four-year-old son of Demosthenes and Gazalie. The yearling brother to Gloaming, who was purchased at tho March sales in Melbourno for 1200gns. recently got into a wire fence, and received a badly cut shoulder and thigh. • Tho coming two-year-old half-sister to Silver Link by Martian, purchased last January at the salo of the Waikanao yearlings by Mr. W. Higgins for 1300 guineas, ha 9 been registered as tho joint property of Messrs. T, M. Mills, F. W. Manton, W. Higgins, and H. Spratt. The last-mentioned is the owner of Inah and other horses. The Woodville trainer T. Lloyd has been at Eiccarton for tho past fortnight superintending the preparation of Sunart for the big handicap at the C.J.C. Eoyal meeting next week. By general consent the Sunny Lake three-y_ear-old is one of the favourites for the race. Mr. W. E. Kemball, who will probably havo a strong team of jumpers to represent him this eoason, has only nominated Lord ' Naear in the Great Northern Hurdles, and Old Mungindi and Gladful in the Great Northern Steeplechase. The Wnnganui Jockey Club would seem to have struck an unlucky patch in falling up against tho Eoyal Meeting at Eiccarton. as it will mean that in the majority of cases the horses, being in the south, will ho sent on to Dunodin for the-June meeting at Wingatui. The entries for the latter fixture are a record, and could easily be mistaken for those of a Grand National meeting. Amongst tho jumpers booked for tho southern trip are J. AV. .Lowe's horses Coalition, Mannish, und Scadown. A little while back the Geelong (Vic.) Eating Club invited tho Protestant clergy of Geelong to bo present at a recent Saturday's race meeting in order to form first-hand opinions of racecourse morality. At a meeting of the Geelong Ministerial Association the invitation was declined with thanks. It was feared its acceptance might be construed into approval of the sport. A potable happening was associated with the meeting of the Werribee Club (Victoria) on April 21. In tho chief event Eoval Token was favourite, and Mnemonic was second choice. Titanga made the early running from Swordstroke. Three furlongs from home Eoyal Token took charge, but was challenged by Mnemonic at the distance. The pair' battled out the issue over tho last furlong, and the judge declared a dead heat. The Mnemonic party decided for a run-oiT, which took place afte? the last race. Eoyal. Token, pulling hard, led in tho run off to tho turn, whore both horses were on terms. At tho half distance -Mnemonic looked like scoring. Eoyal Token, however, finished gamely, and another dead heat was the result. It was practically decided by Mr. T, H. Lowry to mate both Desert Gold ind hor'dam Aurarius .with the imported horse Buckwheat, at present located in New South Wales,'but f owing to a misunderstanding the services of that horse were not hooked. It has now been settled that Desert Gold will luwo Finland as her first consort, while tho probabilities arc that Aurarius will bo sent to Victoria on «i visit to All Black, tho sire of Desert Gold, in which case Mr. Lowry will also send tho imported mare Symbolism across to be 'mated- with Comedy King. With a nomination of thirty-three in ;he ; Great Northern Stcoplechaso, and f :hirt.y-two in the Great Northern JTur- 5 :1b itaco, I lie lists for tho big jumping > svente must bo accounted very satisfae- j :orv. and with few exceptions the best j ilasa of jiuj'ping at present in the Dominion is Orffagnd. Hoi'SFs nominated ■<r both are ..ankeo Jack, Omahu, Sir ■ hh, Liij!',r>o, Maraetotarn, Thrace, Cynic, f.«o.'ie!!a, Slowcoach. Jackaroo, , tfarc'oni, and Harbour Light. Tho .
