LODGE OF FREEMASONS
ANNUAL, COMMUNICATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Invercargill, May 3. The annual communication of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons of New Zealand opened this morning. A large numbor of representatives of the Otago, Southland, Canterbury, and Wellington Lodges attended, but representatives from distant parts of the North Island were fewer, as only those delegates who loft before the railway strike occurred were able to reach Invercargill in "time. W.M. Bro. Maurice Thompson (Past Grand Master, Invercargill) presided. An apology for absence was received from retiring Grand Master Mr. Justice Herdraan, who wrote urging the desirableness of bringing about a union of all Masonic bodies in New Zealand under a New Zealand constitution, anfl also mentioned the necessity of estabirshing a Grand Secretary in one centre. ... R.W. Bro. Thomas Ross (Dunedin) was elected Grand Master. It was decided to endeavour to raise an additional £10,000 within 12 months for the annuity fund. A proposal to subdivide Auckland district was opposed by North Auckland delegates and referred to tho Auckland lodges for consideration. It was decided to hold further communications in the month of February. The draft of an address to be presented to tho Prince of Wales was approved. The installation of the Grand Master Eleot was to take place this evening, WM Bro. Thompson acting as Installing Grand Master. Other appointments announced aro as follow :-Deputy Grand Master. R.W.
