Vice-Regal. Their Excellencies the Governor-General and the Countess of Liverpool returned to Wellington from Auckland by tho Main Trunk express yesterday accompanied by the Hon. Mrs. Tahu Rhodes, the Hon. Eileen l'hmket, and Messrs. Helmoro and Garland, A.D.C.'s. Mr. Gavin Hamilton, private secretary to His Excellency, canje down from Auckland on Saturday by the Tutuuekai. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie left yesterday for Feilding to bo present, as member for the district, at the reception to bo given to tho Prince of Wales. Dr. S. J.- Simpson, who some ten years ago was senior house surgeon at tho Wellington Hospital, under Dr. Hard-wickc-Smith, and who has beea in England and France ever since, is revisiting Wellington. DJ\ Simpson took a postgraduate course'at Home, and was practising therp when the war broke out. .He offered his services to the Government, and had a'good deal of experience. as an Army surgeon. He is at present staying with Mr, A. G. Cummins, at Lower Hutt, and intends to visit his brother, Dr. W. J. Simpson, in Chistchnrch, shortly. Later, Dr. Simpson will probably return to England.

Captaiu Ebenezer J. Thomas, who has hold the position of house manager of tho Auckland _ Hospital for tho Irst eight years, died on Friday evening tit' tho ago of 02.

Captain P. R. Fordhain, who was at one time on the local staff of tho N.Z. Shipping Company, and who has been on war sorvice for five and a half years, has returned to Wellington.

Mr. W. E. Puller, of Messrs. Levin and Co., went, south by the Wahine last evening on business.

An. interesting gathering took place on Thursday evening in Knox Presbyterian Schoolroom, Lower Hull, when tho Rev. James M'Caw, minister of tho church, and Mrs. M'Caw, were made the recipients, of a cheque on the occasion of their leaving for a visit to the Homeland. Rev. J. A. M'Kcnzie, of Petone, presided over the gathering, and Mr. A, Macaskill nindc the presentation. Mr. and Mrs. M'Caw expect to sail in the Ta'imii about May 15. During their absence Rev. John M'Caw, brother of tho minister, will act as locum tcnens.
