ADVANCES TO SOLDIERS
A SLOWING DOWN. For the past two or throe days there has been ninth concern among returned soldiers caused by the announcement made by Mr. Guthrie that there would have to be a reduction or a enmpieto stoppage in (he granting of'loans to soldiers for the purchase of property. A deputation from the 'Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association, with Mr. W. terry, the new chairman; waited on tha Prime Minister'yesterday lo discuss with him this prevailing idea that Advance* for the purpose of placing soldiers oil the land, or of finding homes for them in the centres of population, have been stopped or are about to be stopped. Mr. Massey explained to them that nothing of the sort was intended, that it had become necessary merely to slow down, and that it was impossible for the Government to go on finding money at the rate of over a million a month as it had found it for the 'past eight months. Mr. Massey said that the Government would go on quite steadily, taking commitments iirst, and when jlho House met sufficient authority 1 ' would lis asked for and obtained to keep the Department going.
