Mr. Leslie Austin, of th-a English Pierrots, relates that Hiss Elsn Langley (now Mrs. Hugh M'leod, of Western Australia), the most talented soubrette this country Ims seen for a decade, recently had an operation performed upon lieithroat for ail enlargement which has given her a lot of trouble for years past. Tile result of the operation has been to increase the capacity of her singing voico threefold, without any diminution in the natural beauty of tone.
A very successful ouchro party and dance was held in the Town Hall, Miramar, on Wednesday ovening, and the funds of tho ladies' hockey team, for which it was specially organised, benefited accordingly. Euchre was played from 7.45 p.m. until 9, and the following were tho prize-winnere:—Mre. Morfon 1, Mrs. Butler 2; consolation, Mi's, Anderson; also Mr. It. Enger,'l, and Mr. G. Newton 2; consolation, Mr.- T. R. Brooks. The prizes were presented by Mr. J. Hicks. At the conclusion of the euchre, suppiv was served by the members of the hockey , team, and the hall was cleared for dancing, which lasted until 11.30 p.m., when a most pleasant evening's entertainment was brought to a close. The success of the evening was largely'due to the efforts ot Mrs. Hutchings, Mr. J. Love, and helpers. It has been decided, to close the ICarori croquet greens this afternoon, when there will be 6ome competition.games, ' Afternoon tea will'be provided, and a pleasant social. occasion is expected. , A special meeting of-St.. Mary's Homes Committee took place at Miss Coates's on Tuesday. The meeting was called for the immediate consideration of the question of drainage at the homes, which hus been found to be quite inadequate. It was decided to take every measure to render things as sanitary as possible, and to await Hie reports 'of the council engineer, who has the matter in hand. • A letter of appreciation from Sir James Allen, addressed to Mr, T. Young, as chairman of the' Wellington Executive/of. tho Red/ Cross Society, is as follows;:— "Understanding that shortly you toll' be having a meeting of the Red Cross, [ take this opportunity 1 of writing to say how highly the work of the lied Cross, organisation in New Zealand has been appreciated by me and by the Defence Department during the war lime. It was a: great relief for me to know that comparatively early in the war the New Zealand Branch of the. Rod Cross Society recognised its great opportunities trad ex-, tended its organisation. It was thus» enabled'to come more closely into contact with my Department and with the members of the New Zealand Expeditionarv Force? I trust that this, connection may not grow les9 timd for T fcei sure that there will be many opportunities ..during-. the. training, of thp' Territorial Force for the Red Cross organisation to show its practical sympathy. . At ths monthly meeting of St. Joh* Ambulance Association Committee, the resignation of Mrs. A. H. Waters was received with much regret. Mr. Flnlay at tho instance of the committee, wrote a letter to Mrs. Waters expressing the appreciation that waß felt for her work for the association, which during many years had covered a wide field of activity. RENOWN ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE A- meeting of the Renown Entertainment Committee was held in the Town trail .on. Thursday afternoon... Colonel . 'Roberts"presided. •; Mr. Darroch (hon. secretary) read./a. ; letter from Mr. Hay, representing the Y.M.C.A,, in which the writer slated, that as in the case of the battleship New Zealand the organisation was prepared to do all it could for tho entertainment of, the men. They could provide sleeping accommodation for 250 men, and mako arrangements for' their entertainment; and it was their desire to provide free suppers.' If the committee could see'its way, to make a financial grant, such a proceed- : in? would be of great assistance. Mr. Darroch .was asked to write in reply that., while appreciating the offer of tlio association, the committee did not see its way to accede to the request for <v grant, as the funds were for tho citi-. Hens to deal with, and not any special organisation. , A letter was read from Mr. Cox (Suburbs R'fle ClnM offering to arrange a return' rifle match at Trenbham on Saturday week. The offer met with the apnroval of.the meeting, and it was decided that Mr. Cox. be asked to confer with Mr.' Marryatt. ■ ' A telegram, received from the commander of the Renown, was Toad, in which he stated that the Renown would arrive in Wellington Harbour on Monday morning, but leave would not be given the men until the evening. It was'stated by Mr.' Grant (Snorts. Committee) that the commander had acceptor the programme of sports arranged by the Spm'ts CommWee. Colonel Roberts sugeested that word bp sent that in addition td thin 'programme a cluft would be available for the tarn, 'which, with various entertainments, would be open to them for. the wliolo of tho week. to. , Mrs. Darling, on behalf of the ladies executive, said that " tliry had held a meeting and discussed the matter of entertainments at the club. '■ They had. thought it inadvisable to hold two concerts running, and that preferably tho; concert on 'tho first night (Monday) should bo followed by a dnnce ontho, Tuesday. TlVo- executive had-visited the Pipitea Shed, and found that with whatthe Hnrbour Board had done, and the. Commercial Travellers, the shed had been absolutely transformed. ' . It, was decided that either tickets or badges should secure admission to the club, also that instead of written programmes for th© dances, they should bo printed on cards, the cards to lie placed where, all could 6ee them. . .. If the railways resumed work it wa9 hoped to arrange railway excursions for the men on Thursday and Friday. ( In making a definite outline ot the arrangements for the week some discussion arose a? to the entertainments on luesday and Wednesday nights. The Commercial Travellers were arrangine for the concert aiid refreshments 'for Monday evening.
