FROZEN MEAT TRADE
CLEARING STOCKS FROM BRITISH STORES. From Our Special Correspondent. Palmerston North, .April 23. A letter received in Palmerston North' by the last mail lias the following interesting information on tho position ot tho frozen meat market in London:— Importers who have realised tho importance of improving consumption and hastening the clearance of all stocks from store, in order to expedite the discharge of vessels, have at last been successful in getting tli» authorities to agree again to the principltt of leaving tho distribution in their hands. It is therefore hoped at an early date that meat' will be once' again left to individual firms to find a market and push sales, ratter than go on under the present system of releasing the nieol is application is more or less mado for same. Tho authorities have also intimated that mutton will be reduced to M. per lb., and also t.hat frozen sundries will be lowered to a price corresponding to the present market value, many descriptions being now sold at Smithlield much follow present maximum prices. Homekilled meat -of good quality finds a ready sale, but there is strong objection to the .salo of imported mutton, which mostly consists of heavy ewes, at the. full price. Prices ruling on March 1 (the date of writing) were:—Home-killod beef (sides), Is. 3d. per lb.; imported (.hinds and fores), llhl, and Sid."; Home-killed mutton, and lamb, Is. 33d.; imported, Mid. per lb. On and after March 15 the prices for New Zealand mutton would bo M., and lamb Is. Id. per lb.
