4 — 1 A SOCIETY UNDERTAKES THEIR CARE. London, April 21.' The Australian Children's Society is now dealing with 800 cases. Sime mothers are showing. 110 interest in their offspring, and the society is accepting the responsibility for their care, but is unablo'to secure accommodation in the orphans' homes, all of which are orowdod. It has decided to take over its own house, preferably at the seaside,' where the children will bo educated until they are'four or five years old, when they should he sent to' Australia, The society has the purchase money in sight, andhones to raise money for the mainten-' nnce of the house through voluntary sub-scriptions.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [A cablegram in January stated that a report on the administration of the Australian "G.O.C. Fund" since September 1. when it was handed l over from Headquarters, shows that the Board of Control restricted it to be used to relievo necessitous oases of unmarried mothers. The fund in September amounted to £2U9. Tlie board has since .investigated 368 cases, approved of 143 applications, rejected 225, and has distributed ,£7OO. At least 90 per cent, of the applicants were women of clean reputation previously. Wheroever possible the soldier responsible was paraded. A laige proportion of the rejections were due to the manner in which soldiers offered to shoulder the responsibility. In no instance was there any attempt at evasion.]
