EASTBOURNE COUNCIL VACANCIES
NOMINATIONS CLOSE. Nominations closed yesterday for tho office of Mayor of Eastbourne and for tho four vacant seats 'on the council. These extraordinary vacancies were caused by the resignations of the Mayor (Mr. F. H. Mather), and Councillors 11. Black, R. E. Mnnley, T. W. F. Marsden, mid H. G. Mayer. Messrs. P. Levi and F. H, Mather have been nominated for the Mcyorailtiy, nnd Messrs. W. H. G. Bennett, A W. J. Cook, Henry Downs. Cecil Hnrtridge, C. A. Marquis, T. W. Pilcher, nnd H W Shortt for the vacancies on tho council. The polling will take plnco on April 29, the two polling hooths being the Council Chambers at Eastbourne nnd the Ferry Office, Wellington Mr. S. S. Heath will .be returning officer. A representative deputation of Jiastbourne residonts waited oil Mr, H. VS. Shortt with a request that he should stand for the Mayoralty. Mr. Shortt, ■owing to tho state of Ins health, replied yesterday that he would not be able to allow himself" to bo nominated, The Ratepayers' Association ticket tor the election comprises Messrs. Lovi (Mnyor). and Bennett Cook, Hnrtndge, and Marquis (councillors). Mr. J. 1). Avery was approached, but he could not accept. - .
