Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M.. of Gisborne, in on a visit to Wellington. Dr. Fyffo underwent a serious operation in tlio Lister Private , Hospital, AM Smith Street, yesterday, and is reported to be progressing favourably, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, New Zealand Government Statistician, who represented the Dominion at the Imperial Statistical Conference, will, with Mrs, Ewer, l«nvo Glasgow for Now York on May b, en route to Wellington. Mr. T. H. Burner, late of the High Commissioner's office, proposfs to pay a visit to New Zealand, leaving London about the middle of this year, He will bo accompanied by Mrs. Hamer. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. J. O'Donovan, accompanied by Inspector C. R. Broberg, have left for Auckland in connection with the visit of the Prince of Wales. The police escort will be in charge of Inspector Broborg, Detective Torrence, of tho local detective staff, has also been detailed for duty in connection with tho Princo's escort. .'• Mr. L. S. Nicol, of tho local Customs Department, has been transferred to Samoa. He is to leave to take- up his new position on the Nnvua, which' sails from Auckland next week. Dr. Wallace Mackenzie underwent nn operation in'the Wellincrlon Hospital .yesterday afternoon. H ; s condition last evening was reported to be serious. Mr. and Mrs. D. S, Patrick and son will leave by the Manuka to-day on an extended trip to England. They will return via America. Mr. Robert Greig, who has been to London in connection with tile securing of "Chu Chin Chow" for Australia, was a through passenger by the Niagara, from Vancouver, this week. Ho was accompanied by his wife, known to tho stage as Miss Beatrice Holloway. On Wednesday afternoon last, on be-, half of. tho Minister of Marine, Lieut.Commnndor Barnsdale. RiN.. presented a gold medal for ability and conduct to John Henry Gibson, lato of tho training ship Amokurn. The trophy was won last year. Its presentation had been postponed on account of Gibson's absence from Wellington. Mr. G. It, Wilkin, who for some years has been manager of the Opotiki branch of Messrs. Dalgety and i Co., Ltd., is retiring shortly on pension, and will be succeeded bv Mr. T, F. Martin, of the company's Hnwke's Bay staff. Detective-Sergeant E. Nnpthino and Senior-Detective F. J. Piggott, of Melbourne, who have been appointed to attend tho Prince on his tour of Australia, have left Melbourne for New Zealand, and will join the Royal party here. Mr. Goorge W. King, C.8., A.M.1.C.8., lias been appointed county engineer to the Raglan County Council. Professor Newton, Rhodes Profcwor of Colonial History at tho London University, and 6ccrotary to the Imperial Studies Committee, who is vteiting New Zealand as special travelling commissioner of the Colonial Instituto, will arrive in Auckland n.bout April 28. Ho will give a, lecturo entitled "Sea Power, and Empire," arrangements for whipb have been niado by the council of tho Auckland University College. Professor Wilkinson, of tho Sydney University, has been appointed one if tho judges in connection with the architectural competition for the now arts building, which i 6 to'be erected by tho Auckland University College.
Stall-Nurse Miss A. A. Martin, of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Deserve, has teen mentioned in a dispatch from LieutenantGeneral Maud for gallant and distinguished services in the field. Nurse Martin is the daughter of Mr. A. E. Martin, Sherbourno Road, Mount Eden, Auckland. Mr. Gordon James Wilkinson, who died at his mother's house in Grass Street, Oriental Bay, on Wednesday, was the fifth and youngest 6011 of the late Mr. D. N. Wilkinson, one of the early settlers in that part of Wellington. He was l>orn in Oriental Bay .'l3 years ago, and after finishing his education at Clyde Quay School, joined the City Treasurer's staff. Last year ho suffered severely from influenza, und his death was due to the after-effects of that illness. For some years he was an active member of the Star Booting Club, and he was also an amateur runner. Mr. H. Dyson has been appointed secretary to the Wellington Storenien's Union, vice Mr. A. L. Monteith, who recently became secretary of the Tramwavmen's Union. Mr. John Tart, of Messrs. J. nnd N. Tnit, accompanied by his wife, left for Auckland l>v last evening's express in order to witness the arrival there of the Prince of Wales.
