MANAWATU RACES
AMYTHAS DEFEATS ARROWSMITH GREAT RACE FOR GOLD CUP DAINTY STEP WINS BIG HANDICAP PRODUCE STAKES WON BY LITTLE RIVER. (Special Reporter.) _ The Manawatu Meeting opened yesterday ill showery weather, but the attendance was not adversely alfected. The course was very heavy. Tho racing was full of surprises, and some hot favourites weiv defeated. The Gold Cup was a splendid race to watch, and if resulted in a thrillins finish. The defeat of Humbug in the Sires' l'roduce Stakes was a big surprise to his trainer, and the chestnut will Dot be produced again at the meeting. The events were got off well to time, and the last race was run ill a good light. Speculation was brisk, the sum of £41,695 being put through for the day, compared with £36,195 for the first day of last year's meeting. THE RACINC DESCRIBED Sandy Macdonald and Metronome woro the scratching for the Apprentices' Plate, leaving seven runners. Island was made a good favourite, with Sea. Foam next in demand, l'rior to tho stafl, Gay Patron bolted, and lost his rider, but was caught ami took his place in the field. Island was soon in front and led into tho straight, where Sea Foam challenged him and soon headed him, winning by half a length. The third horse was fifteen lengths away. Scratching in the Karero Hurdles reduced the field to eight runners, Yankee Jaek being made favourite. He and Sweet linpcrary _ inado the early running, but half a mile from home Zola and Ha.utawa moved up. Zola jumped the last fence m front, and ran home an easy winner from Sweet Tipperary, with 1 ankce Jack two lengths away. Sail' Homo and Hautawa were the next to finish. The Kemball bracket was in.most demand for the big handicap, Lingerie and Daytime, being next in favour. At the start Lingerie dwelt and lost a lot of ground. Dainty Step immediately took up the running, and led Daytime Haversack, and Bonettcr into the straight and down tho back. Bounding tile bend Daytime fell back, and Bonetter ran up to the leader as they entered the straight. However, the light-weight went away again, and though challenged by Marqueteur, she lasted long enough to wi.ii by a head. Bonetter was three lengths away, and then came Detroit, who waß prominent all the way. Oratress ran badly, and was in the rear all the way. Marqueteur was unlucky not to win, aB he carno from a long way hack in the last lialf mile.
Chrysostom, Fortune Teller, and Mand were the scratchings for the Sires' Produce Stakes, Humbug being backed down to a, very short price, with Raceful and Little River next ill order of merit. Tho favourite began smartly, but was steadied, aud ltieuse and Blackmail led down the back, with the favourite and Raceful together, and tho others some lengths away. Rounding tho bend Raceful ran to the leaders, and Demand moved up from tho back. Demand soon headed the others and at tho stewards' stand, he was in charge, but Gray then brought Little River along, and in a close finish won bv half a length. Insurrection was two lengths away, and then came Raceful and. Blackmail. Humbug cut up badly and probably tho heavy going beat such a long-striding horse.
Thero was a iicld of fifteen in the Hack Welter Handicap, Rebuff, Simon, and Farce all being well backed. At tho 6tart Farce led Rebuff and a bunched field. Going out of tho straight, Rebuff and Dixie Boy took charge, and they led Farce, Self Alliance, Molyneaux, and Sweet Song down tho back. Three furlongs from home Self Alliance broke a leg, and he and his stable companion, Guianaform, camo down. Rebuff and Sweet Song were first into tho straight, followed by Amberine. Sweet Song held command at tho distance, but Valencia finished fast on the rails and got up in time to win by half a length from Sweet Song. Whizz Bang was two lengths away, and then came Molyneaux and
Xext came the Gold Cup. When the numbers were hoisted it was found that Fiery Cross and Oratress were scratched. When Amytlias arrived iu'the birdcago he was given a round of applause, and tho same treatment was accorded Arrowfimith. This pair held the attention of the crowd throughout, and also on the machine. Amytlias finished up favourite, but thero was a lot of support for the English horse. Mr. Keith got them o(I to a beautiful start. Gray immediately pulled Arrowsmith in behind. Miss Gold led tho favourite out of tho straight, and then came Vagabond and Arrowsmith together. Down the back M'Flinn tonn Amytlias to tho front, and Gray brought his mount into second place. The excitement now grew intense, and both horses were "called." Amytlias was first into the straight, and with a furlong to so both horses wero being hard ridden, tiiu favourite having an advantage of a, length. With about 150 yards to go there was only half a length between them, and both whips were out. The horses did not respond, and the whips wcjo dropped simultaneously. Both riders were now straining their, utmost, and in ft thrilling finish Amytlias secured the honours by a bare length. Ton lengths away came Vagabond, followed by Miss Gold and Star Lartv. Owing to the absence of F. E. Easton, the Gold Cup was not publicly presented. Liko the previous contests the race was a great success. For tho Woodhcy Hack Handicap tho bifeest field of tho day was saddled i">. l'arorangi finished up favourite, with Heather Sprig and Crucclle the best backed of the others. At the start Yankee Dan led Passin' Through and Asterina. These positions were maintained for halt a mile, when Sir Fanciful and Irajr;lta took charge. Sir Fanciful gave way at the straight entrance, whero Paroranin took charge. Crucellc finished fast on ' the outside, amL got up in time to win bv a neck. Princess Marion waß two lengths away, and then came Utuwai. Parorangi had to cover a lot of ground, and he should do better next time. The day's racing concluded with tho Telegraph Handicap, for which Bindle, Tigritiya, Inali, Swanee River, and Paroninwero withdrawn. Mustard Pot finished
ill) favourite, with 80-l'eep also heavily backed. Silver Link, who showed the way to Parisian Diamond and Chimera down the back, but rounding: the bend Mustard Pot and 80-Peer moved up, and they ioined Silver Link at the distance. In the run to the post 80-Pecp forged ahead, and got the verdict by a neck. Silver Link was two lengths away, and then came Chimera, Acre was left at the float. and ran in the rear the whole way. 80-Pecn carried the same weight as she won with on the second day at Wanganui.
