FOR ORONGORONGO TUNNEL. There was a special general meeting of tho City Council yesterday afternoon to consider tho question of adopting tho principle of co-operative labour in con- • nection with the piercing .of the Wellington waterworks tunnel through tli9 Orongorongo range, in order to tap tho waters of tho Orongorongo River as a ' supplementary supply to the present Wainui system. The Press were not admitted to the meeting. At its conclusion it was reported that the following resolution had been passed:—"That tho council approves the co-operative system" in constructing the proposed tunnel at Orongorongo in connection with the extension of the city's water supply, and recommend completing arrangements as submitted by Messrs. Semple, Opie, Matthews. and .Tones, acting for a party of co-operative workers, the aforesaid to bo conditional on the ratepayers voting in favour of the scheme and method of construction." Asked, why it was necessary for n" method of working to bo sanctioned by tho ratepayers, the Mayor said that if the money was taken froni tho district fund for the work was no way of replacing it, so tho work would have to bo paid for with a loan, which the ratepayers would have to approve. He had , been advised that there was no other wav to do the work by the co-operative system.
