NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By Glsncoe.)

Owners are given a final reminder that acceptances for the : Mnnawatu Meeting close to-night at' 9 o'clock. Entries for the Hawkc's Bay Jockey Club's Autumn Meoting\close on Friday •next. L. Wilson, with Maiolia, Kohu, anil Retaua, arrived from the south yesterday. The. horses named are to compete at Trentham this week. J. H. Jeffevd, with half-a-dozen horses, was one of the first of the visiting brigade to reach Trent'ham. As soon as the weights appeared, Goldstream was scratched for all orujagemenfs at the Manawatu Meeting. • Owing to the death of Mrs. G. 'G. Stead, it is inrnrohable that anv of the Stead team will lie racing at. Trentlvtm this week, so the much-debated contest between Sasanof and Amythas in the Trentham Gold Cup may not eventuate: After doing a pallon ht Riccarton on Saturday morning, Fiery Cross pulled up a trifle lame, but the injury would not appear to be serious, as tho Glcnapp gelding has' been paid np for in tho Thompson Handicap on Thursday. J. M'Combe is bringing Bon Spec to the Wellington Meeting, and foe and F. Christmas, with Fierv Cro=s and Arrowsmith,' are leaving Lyttelton this evenin;?. F. D. Jones, with Amythns and Mustard Pot, is expected by the imdip boat. Kilmoon, who changed hands at Hiecarton) last week, will in future he trained by F, Christmas. C. Christie, with the National Steeplechase winner, Loehella, reached Trea tham on Saturday. Loehella will race in hack hurdle .races here. Very satisfactory acceptances • have been received for the handiean events for the opening day' of the Trentham Meeting, which takes place on Thursday , next. Nineteen horses hnvo been paid , up for in the Thompson Handicap, hut , five of them also figure in the Railway , Handicap. The horses, with dual en- , pagenicnts are A.rrowsmilh, Tigritiya, Hetaua, Eiirly Dawn, and Mustard Pol. , The strike of the jockeys riding at Avondale on Saturday was a most unfor- , tunuto affair, and it is to lie honed for the sake of all concerned fthat the last ' has been heard of the matter. The telegraphed accounts of the matter do not. r state precisely why the iockeys -wanted « postponement on the first dav, but if > it was becauso the weather had rendered [ the track unsafe then there will he a lot of public sympathy for the strikers, for in tho there, have been numerous ' falls on fliis track when t'ht* iventher , lias been bad. A feature of the concluding! day lit Randwiek on Saturday was the success ' of the colours of the ex-New Zealander, Mr. E. J. Watt, who won two races with his horses Bright Night and All ' Aboard. , C. Fjmerson left San Francisco by t'he Tofua. on Saturday last. He should arrive in Auckland about the end of the month.
