PASTORAL LANDS
A COMMISSION OF INQUIRY.
The appointment of the Southern rastoral Lands Commission is announced in the Gazette. The commission consists of Messrs. It. T. Sadd, Ola so Commissioner of Crown Lands, W. B. Jhiek'liiirst, L. Cockayne, I). Jardine, R. Scott, A. M'lnnes, and C. Todd. Its task is to investigate the tenures of Hie pastoral Crown lands in Canterbury, Otagu, ami Southland, and determine if they are in the best interests of Iho State and of the tenants. The order of icferenee mentions the conditions of tenancy, the valuation of improvements, subdivision, the prevention of aggregation, th« deterioration of grass lands, and the methods of regrassing, the condition of the runs with regard to winter feed, the question of encouraging cultivation And the utilisation of water, 'the commission is to advise if the burning of tussock land is desirable, and, if su, under what circumstances. The report, is to bo completed not Inter than May 31 next.
