At a meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board yesterday, Sir James Wil•=im was re-elcc.ted chairman for the ensuing two years, appreciative referenco lieing made to his services.—Special Correspondent.

The resignation of Mr. J. P. Firth as headmaster of Wellington College, does not take cltect until the end of the current school year. The position will be advertised in New Zealand and Australia shortly.

Messrs. Clarke Johnson (chief inspector fo" New Zealand) and G. M. lieid (London secretary), of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., have returned from the north. .Mr. AVarrington Lainpr. chairman of directors in London (with .Mrs. Laing), reached New Zealand via Australia last week, and will arrive in Wellington from Auckland in a few davs. Mr. Laing will visit main Ne-.v Zealand centres in the interests ol liis company during the next few weeks.

Mr. James Pow, who was recently appointed general secretary of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, will arrive in Wellington next wer-k to take up his duties. Mr. Pow was a colonel in the N.Z.E.F.

Mr. J. C. Martin, who for the past threo months has been relieving Mr. T. A. Ballantyne, postmaster at l'etone, has been transferred to Courtenay Place to relieve Mr. W. P. Thompson during his two months' leave.

The death is announced of Mr.'Christoph- Basstian, one of Southland's carl.v residents, aped 60 years. Born at Hobart, Tasmania, in IS.'il, he arrived at Inyercarjiili in 1870. .Mr. ISnsstian took" « live!" interest in all public matters, and served a term in the Borough Council. He \vn. also a keen sportsman, being a foundation member of the Southland Amateur Athletic Association, Southland Amateur Rnwi.ig Association, Inveroargill Bowing Club (1875), Invercargill Gymnasium, etc. Volunteering also claimed his enthusiastic spirit as quar-tenrnster-serge.iut in the original Invcrciirgi'.l Aitillerv, subsequently designated th) 0 Battery, and he participated in the formation o£ the Invercargill Engipcer-,' Corps. Deceased's son, Mr. li. C. Basstian, is engineer for the Southland County Council.
