"'■EASIER MEETING AT HEftETAUNGA QUALIFYING FOR PROVINCIAL' CHAMPIONSHIP. I, At Heretnunga- on • Saturday the Wellington Golf Club, commenced its Easter tournament and the qualifying rounds for the Wellington provincial championship were played off. The competitions attracted a large number of entries, no fewer than eighty-five contesting the I qualifying rounds for the championship. The links were in excellent condition and the greens all that could be desired. The ■ calm in (ho morning gave the contestants every opportunity to play at their beat, and the cards returned were quite good. Even though the players were arranged in three sets to start at tho first, eighth, and twelfth tees respectively . to prevent crowding, a good deal of congestion took place at one or two tees, and this tended to handicap the players. _ A rising wind in the afternoon was indined to make the scores a bit higher. The. championship qualifying rounds and the medal handicap were puiyed in one to save time. The best sixteen in. the qualifying rounds will compete for the championship to-dav and to-morrow., In addition there will be bogey compoti-! tions to-day. . ■ Li the morning' A, Duncan, holder o| , tho championship, went out in •34 and came home in 39. At the eighth tee there was a great amount of congestion and in consequence ho was kept waiting, and this interfered with his play con-, Biderably. His performance, however, . was .verv good, and of the sixteen selected to'compete for tho championship he made the best score. He was not putting so well in the afternoon, but nevertheless won easily. ..',,., J. L. Black, of .tho municipal links, is a promising player, and his perform- , nnce of 80 was very creditable. He ' plaved very steady golf. Another promising pla'ver is Douglas Whyte, who made his first appearance .in a compc • tition on Saturday... His .84 resulted in much favourable comment. Considering it is his first tournament he is shaping exceedingly well. . Kissling, who won the ■ Medal. Handicap, played a remarkably steady gamo. , Ho went out in 38. E. ,T. Eeid's performance was ako very good. DETAILS QF QUALIFYING BOUNDS. Ist Round. 2ud Eound. ft © o I 8 I ■ i P "2. » £ a "3 2 0 jj g •" 3 9 <s o 5 ° 0 w■■■ W fc OJ £ H - Kissing 85, 15 70 85 70 140 E.
