RAILWAY WORKERS' RESOLUTIONS

i The following resolutions were carried At a meeting of the Thorndon branch of the A.S.~". S.;—"That this branch of the A.S.R.S. heartily congratulates Messrs. M. Lee and A. N. Longton on their elec: Hon as representatives of railway workers on tho North Island Appeal Board, and considers that their success serves as a vindication in regard to their attitude on matters in' the immediate past namely, Mr. Lee, in his action whilst he was a member, of the National Exeoutive, and Mr. Longton, in the courageous, and spirited fight ho put up in connection with the Department's determined and unwarranted "efforts to prevent his .advancement in the Railway service." Also; "That this branbh of the A S.R.S. protests against the widespread belief that, wages should be fixed on a cost-of-living basis, and asserts that the idea is pernicious and intoleraUlo, as it means putting progress in. chains and liberty in fotters. It means fixing a standard of liberty and a standard of living which must remark fixed, and as workers we cannot accept that proposition. W,e demand a progressively advancing "tandnrd of life, and'havo an abiding faith in a better future for all mankind. We discard and denounco a systfni of fixing wages solely on- the basis of the family budgets and bread and butter -rills,"and emphatically maintain that workers have ,a right not orfly to.a living, but modern society must provide more than is understood by the" term 'a living.' It must concede to all workers a fairer reward for their contribution to society, a contribution without which a 'progressing civilisation is. impossible. / Labour understands . fully that powerful interests today ore determined to achieve reaction in industry if possible; they seek to disband or cripple the organisations of the workers, to lower the standard of living, and to keep from restriction, their power to manipulate and'fix nrices. Labour must be and is militant in the struggle to combat these sinister influences ami tendencies'; it wiOl not permit a reduction in the standard of living, nor will it consent to reaction towanls autocratic cortrol."
